Two sources, and an honest gap.
Source one: SEC EDGAR
Filings for the listed self-storage REITs are mandatory public disclosures, filed under penalty and archived by the SEC. Facility counts, rentable square footage, realized rent per occupied square foot and occupancy all appear in them, and every figure on this site that comes from a filing links to that filing so you can find the line. Where a figure is from an annual report rather than the latest quarter, the card says so, because a 10-K number and a 10-Q number are not interchangeable.
Source two: the BLS producer price index
Series PCU531130531130, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics producer price index for miniwarehouse and self-storage unit operators, NAICS 531130. Monthly since December 2003, indexed so that December 2003 equals 100, not seasonally adjusted. We retrieve it through the St. Louis Fed API and report it as an index, because that is what it is. We do not convert it into a dollar rate for a unit size, because that would need a per-square-foot assumption we would be inventing.
How we treat the one filed rent figure
Public Storage's Form 10-K, FY2025 discloses realized annual rent per occupied square foot of $22.54 for its Same Store Facilities. We report it because it is the only per-square-foot rent figure in this industry that anyone can check for free at source. We label it as one company on a same-store basis, not a market average, and we do not multiply it by a unit's square footage to produce a rent. Small units carry a far higher rate per square foot than large ones, and a same-store portfolio figure includes tenants on rates set years ago.
The 50-state problem
There is no free primary source for median dollars per square foot by state. The comprehensive datasets are subscription research products, and the free state tables published by aggregators are derived from their own listing inventory rather than a facility survey. We previously published 15 states from those sources. We now publish none, and say so, rather than shading a map with numbers we cannot stand behind.
Re-verification
REIT figures are refreshed against each new filing. The price index is refreshed when BLS publishes, monthly. There is no operator page on any refresh cycle, because we no longer fetch any.
Conflicts of interest
storagefacilityprice.com has no affiliate revenue, no operator or aggregator referral codes, no investment position in any storage REIT and no vendor sponsorships. Digital Signet owns and funds the site.
